I always thought "server" was an absurd way to escape between the horns of "waiter/waitress," because, of course, it ends in -er just as "waiter" does.

I keep hoping "waiter" will go the way of "director" and come back into use, stripped of its gender.

"I'm Taylor, and I'll be your waiter this evening." Perfect.
