tropology and wells

The lectionary — those readings that come at church on a three-year rotation — brings them back new every time.

I'm thinking of powerful thoughts my friend Beth Wyndham, now rector of St Nick's in the Hill Country, gave last time around: the woman at the well as tropology!

Christ as a symbol of . . .  Christ?

Yep.    The well is where brides (Rebekah, Rachel, Zipporah) meet their grooms (Abraham, Jacob, Moses), but this bride was stained, jaded, and dishonored, and in several important ways invisible and unseen.    So our bridegroom, who knows everything of us, comes to us to redeem us and bring the town to Him.

At that historical well, in that long-ago place, a cosmic event was tropologized.    Our fractal God!
