I always thought it was great that in Lewis's Space Trilogy the angels existed on the universe's permanent grid, and so, to accomplish the appearance of standing in front of you, they had to move along a complex pathway. 

When Ransom first sees one on Earth, he sees this, neither stillness nor motion, and loses his own balance.
