I've seen a flood of testimony from black women about what it meant to be black, and a woman — a girl — and to see the miracle of Lt Uhuru on "Star Trek." Only that person can truly testify to the power of that image.

But I'd like to chip in: it was important — vitally important — for a young white boy in Brady Bunch America to see Lt Uhuru, not just a woman and a black one, not just in space but also in charge. I needed to see that as well, and it very likely changed me. 

On a mission whose unforgettable purpose was to blaze trails, and boldly, she succeeded like few did.
