I tend to think that Gesture Buildings can be wonderful, like beautifully rendered blank walls in a home can be beautiful. Surely the Guggenheim in Bilbao is a vindication of those 20th-century architects' ideas. But, in particular, that style is not suited for either the typical residence or several-story-ish–high buildings in a city.
The older architects seem to understand how people interact with buildings: [1] on the street level, where shops and lobbies are arrayed; [2] from a distance, sometimes over other buildings, where the eye is drawn usually to a building's crown.
There are several generations now that seem to ignore (or maybe not even grasp) that dual identity of a modest urban building.
