One hundred years ago, the reality of the world was that a guy like me would have seen war — possibly not lived past 25, possibly lived, but with broken body or mind.
How the world has changed! Real change, friends! The war that ended a century ago may not have been the War to End All War, but it was the beginning of a drastic shift from swords to plowshares. Sure, war is still with us, but incredibly diminished compared to other ages.
It's amazing and humbling that a citizen would be called to lay down his or her life; it's amazing and humbling that so many citizens now live without ever getting that call.
Thank a veteran for serving. Thank God and humanity that so few have to.
